History and customs of Spain
Romans, Visigoths and almost eight centuries of Muslim rule left their mark, from the Alhambra to the Mosque of Córdoba.
In 1492 Granada, the last Muslim kingdom, fell, and the same year the Americas were reached. Spain later became a great empire and is now a democracy of 17 autonomous communities, each with its own identity.
Spain joined the European Union in 1986 and adopted the euro from 1999. It weathered the 2008 crisis, with unemployment above 25%, and tourism is again breaking records with over 85 million visitors a year.
Dinner is late, from about 9 pm, tapas are shared and long after-meal chats are sacred. Festivals like Valencia’s Fallas, San Fermín or Easter Week fill the calendar.
