History and customs of France
The Revolution of 1789 ended absolute monarchy and left the motto “liberty, equality, fraternity”. The Eiffel Tower was built for the 1889 World’s Fair.
France grew out of Roman Gaul and the Frankish kings. Louis XIV made Versailles the centre of power in the 17th century, and after the Revolution and Napoleon the country became a republic.
France is a founding member of the EU and a nuclear power. Since 2015 it has suffered terrorist attacks, Notre-Dame burned in 2019, and Paris hosted the Olympics in 2024.
